Gonorrhea Symptoms

Gonorrhea is an STD that is often asymptomatic, so regular testing is important for detection. The long term health consequences are extremely unpleasant if left untreated. Gonorrhea can lead to infertility/sterility, chronic pelvic pain, and even death. Treatment is simple, so getting tested is very important.

General Symptoms

  • Discomfort, burning, or pain during urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Abnormal discharge, sometimes containing blood
  • Anal bleeding
  • Anal pain

Womens' Symptoms

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Fever
  • General feeling of tiredness or fatigue
  • Pain while engaging in sexual intercourse
  • Itching in or around the vagina
  • Swollen glands at the opening of the vagina
  • Painful glands at the opening of the vagina
  • Lower abdomen pain or discomfort

Mens' Symptoms

  • Many men do not experience any symptoms
  • Testicular swelling
  • Testicular pain

Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics. It normally requires on dose of either Cipro XR, Tequin, or Levaquin. In recent years there has been a drug resistant strain of gonorrhea, so some physicians are now using an injectable antibiotic called Ceftriaxone, given in conjunction with the oral antibiotic.
